Where Abu Dhabi gyms lose money

Four leaks, and how each one closes

The leak

Trainer files nobody can find

Abu Dhabi has given the Sports Council the job of licensing trainers. When the rules land, you’ll want each trainer’s certificates in one place, not spread across email threads and a drawer.

The fix

Every trainer on file

Each trainer’s profile holds their certifications, qualifications and specialisations, next to their classes, attendance and pay.

The leak

Race-season enquiries go cold

From October to December, Abu Dhabi is training for something: a 10 km, a half, the marathon. People message about a programme, get a reply two days later, and sign up somewhere else.

The fix

Leads that get followed up

Every enquiry lands in one list. Give a lead a free trial class or a multi-day pass, and WhatsApp follow-ups go out before and after the trial.

The leak

VAT invoices done by hand

Every sale needs a tax invoice with your TRN and the VAT shown in AED. Typing them up at month end is where the mistakes creep in.

The fix

A tax invoice on every sale

Add your TRN once. Every payment gets a numbered tax invoice with the 5% worked out, whether your prices include VAT or sit on top of it.

The leak

Renewals slip through

A plan ends on the 12th, nobody notices, and the member quietly stops coming.

The fix

Reminders before it expires

WhatsApp reminders go out a week, three days and a day before the end date, and dues follow-ups keep going after it.

Licensing

The Sports Councilnow handles licensing

On 23 September 2026, Abu Dhabi’s Executive Council gave the Abu Dhabi Sports Council the job of licensing sporting establishments across the emirate, and of accrediting sports professionals and issuing them licences to practise.

The detailed regulations come next: the Council’s board will issue them once the Executive Council approves. The exact requirements haven’t been published.

What you can do now is have your records in order. Trainer certificates on each trainer’s profile, health notes and medical conditions on each member’s, and every payment and invoice filed against the member it belongs to.

Race season 2026

October to Decemberis when people start

The ADNOC Abu Dhabi Marathon runs on 12 December 2026, with full marathon, 10 km and 5 km races. Two warm-up races come first: a 10 km in Al Dhannah on 24 October and a half marathon in Al Ain on 7 November. Last year’s edition drew more than 37,000 runners.

That’s a city full of people with a date to train for. Run-club classes, strength programmes for runners and PT blocks sell well in these weeks. Share an enquiry link, book trials, and let the follow-ups run on their own.

Abu Dhabi rules, in plain words

Licences, trainers,VAT and records

Licence

The Sports Council now licenses gyms

A resolution issued on 23 September 2026 gives the Abu Dhabi Sports Council the mandate to license sports establishments in the emirate. Its licensing regulations are still to be issued, so check with the Council before you open or add an activity.

Trainers

Trainer licences are coming

The same resolution makes the Council responsible for accrediting sports professionals and issuing them licences to practise. The rules aren’t published yet. Keeping certificates on file now means less scrambling later.

Today

The federal licence for training centres

The Ministry of Sports issues a licence to practise sports activities to private centres and clubs that train people, with approval from the sports body that covers each activity. Dubai has moved this to its own Sports Council; ask the Abu Dhabi Sports Council whether it still applies to you.

VAT

5% VAT, five years of records

Registration is mandatory once taxable sales pass AED 375,000 a year. Keep VAT records for five years, or seven if they also back your Corporate Tax return.

FAQ

What Abu Dhabi ownersask on the demo

Who licenses gyms in Abu Dhabi?

A resolution issued on 23 September 2026 gives the Abu Dhabi Sports Council the mandate to license sports establishments in the emirate. Its detailed regulations are still to come, so confirm the current process with the Council.

Do Abu Dhabi trainers need a licence?

Most likely. The Sports Council now has the mandate to accredit sports professionals and license them to practise, but the regulations haven’t been published, so who needs one isn’t set yet.

Can I keep my trainers’ certifications in the software?

Yes. Each trainer’s profile holds their certifications, qualifications and specialisations, so your trainer records live in one place instead of a folder.

Does it work for a gym in Al Ain?

Yes. VAT is the same across the emirates. Set your gym to AED and UAE time, add your TRN, and run each branch from one account.

Does it handle UAE VAT?

Yes. Add your TRN in settings and every payment gets a tax invoice with 5% VAT, in AED. Not registered yet? Invoices go out without VAT until you add one.

Can members pay online?

Yes — renewals and dues are paid by card in the member app, through Stripe or Nomod, settled to your own account. Cash and bank transfers are recorded at the desk.

Why is the price in US dollars?

We bill the software in US dollars. Your members pay you in AED, and their invoices are in AED.
